METI UKPEH, ESQ.,REFLECTS ON NIGERIAN DEMOCRACY: A RENEWED CALL TO ACTION

As we commemorate June 12, a day that symbolizes our nation's quest for democracy and progress, I am compelled to reflect on the state of our beloved country, Nigeria. This day presents an opportunity for introspection, not just on our past, but on the possibilities that lie ahead.

Over the years, I have witnessed with great concern the decline of our economy and the erosion of hope among our citizenry. There have been times when despair seemed overwhelming, and the thought of seeking greener pastures elsewhere appeared to be the only viable option. However, I have come to realize that if citizens of other nations had given up on their countries in the face of adversity, we would not have the advanced societies we admire today.

We, as Nigerians, have a critical role to play in shaping the future of our nation. We must stand in solidarity, harness our collective strength, and work towards building the Nigeria of our dreams—a Nigeria where democracy thrives, justice is upheld, and our heroes who fought for independence can rest in peace, knowing their sacrifices were not in vain.

Our democracy is at a crossroads. The integrity of our electoral process has been compromised by irregularities, leading to a loss of public trust. As legal practitioners, we have a particular responsibility to uphold the rule of law and ensure that justice is served. The legal profession, once revered for its commitment to justice and integrity, is gradually losing its esteemed position. We must take immediate action to restore the dignity of our profession and contribute meaningfully to the development of our nation.

To achieve the Nigeria we envision, we must confront the challenges of bad leadership and critically examine our democratic processes. We must ask ourselves the hard questions: Can democracy truly thrive in Nigeria? What role must each of us play to ensure that our nation lives up to its potential?

In conclusion, I reaffirm my hope in Nigeria and my faith in the resilience of our people. I believe that together, we can overcome our challenges and build a nation that is just, prosperous, and worthy of our highest aspirations. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and long live the Nigerian Bar Association.
