BY LAWRENCE SHEGUN AYEWA: MY RENEWED HOPE FOR NIGERIA AND REFLECTION ON NIGERIAN DEMOCRACY
Initially May 29th but now June 12 is more than just a holiday but an opportunity to reflect on what was and is and might be.
I have shed alot of tears for Nigeria over the years. We have watched our economy go from good to almost none existent.
I have lost hope and told myself Japa is the way but then I have pondered several times what if citizens of civilized countries gave up on their country and ran away, will Nigerians have had countries they are running to now to seek pastures new?
We can stand in solidarity and build the Nigeria of our dreams. We can achieve the democracy we so crave.
Desire of citizens in several advance countries sparked revolutions, inspired and helped shaped their society into what they enjoy today and are proud of.
The country of dreams can be achieved and our heroes — Herbert Macaulay, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, Ahmadu Bello, Anthony Enahoro, and many others who fought valiantly for independence and the right to self-govern can be proud where they rest peacefully.
Today I here state that if we must better our country then we have to collectively fight out bad leadership and ask ourselves if Democracy can be truly achieved.
We have watched our electoral process turn to an object of ridicule maned by irregularities and loss of Public trust.
Nigeria can be great again and be a giant but then we all have our roles to play.
While Growing up, lawyers were custodians of justice and an envious profession but today we are gradually turning to a laughing stock and are ridiculed daily by persons who have not even set feet in a classroom. We must do more.
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Nigerian Bar Association.
