"I FELICITATE WITH EASTERN BAR FORUM(EBF) ON ITS QUARTERLY MEETING IN UYO FROM 24TH TO 25TH MARCH, 2023".

May I heartily felicitate with the regional body of NBA, Eastern Bar Forum, on the occasion of its first quarterly meeting slated to hold from 24th to 25th March, 2023 in the beautiful city of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. 

It is my earnest crave that the deliberations in the meeting be tilted toward the rejuvenation of the welfare of lawyers,  problems hovering around the electoral space in Nigeria, the cashless policy of the CBN, the human rights abuse of electorates, conflicting court judgments, welfare of young lawyers amidst other social vices facing the polity. 

I sincerely have no doubt that the august meeting will make resolutions that will better the lots of its 9-member states, NBA and Nigeria as a whole. 

I most warmly welcome EBF members to Akwa State. Do well to enjoy our awesome delicacies, to wit: Afang, Editan, Edikang iköng, Etidot, Ekpang Nkukwö, Anem, Ikpöng, et Al.

Akwa Ibom Customary Courts: Who will Save Our District Court Chairmen? By ~ Meti M. Ukpeh, Esq. [Uyo-based Human Rights Lawyer ] In Nigeria, beyond the Superior Courts of record recognized by the Constitution of Nigeria(as amended), there exist several other layers of courts, most of which exist by dint of the laws of the various states. In this class are the Customary Courts, Magistrates Courts, the Area Courts, among others.  In Akwa Ibom State, the Customary Courts occupy the immediate layer after the Customary Court of Appeal (though yet to be established), which explains why appeals from the Customary Courts go to the High Courts(S.67, CCL,2022).The Customary Court is the closest court to the grassroots(S.1, 14, and 18, CCL.) The Customary Courts in the state handle not less than 70 percent of the cases adjudicated upon in the State.
