DESMOND YAMAH WISHES THE LARGER NIGERIANS AND THE BAR HAPPY DEMOCRACY DAY

It is important to underscore the fact that Nigeria celebrates her Democracy Day on June 12, which allows us the opportunity to celebrate and appreciate our democratic society.

Subsequently,  It’s very easy for people who live in a free society to take their freedoms for granted. Yet, when freedom is absent, life includes unimaginable challenges that are often incomprehensible.

Today, as we Mark and celebrate our democracy day, let’s further ponder and reflect on the history of democracy of our country, thank those who influenced the development of our government, and look for opportunities to promote and protect our own nation’s democracy.

As we reflect on our own freedoms and consider the country’s current state of democracy, take inventory of how many ways we participate in the collective-decision making of our country, and support the ideals of democracy.

[Uyo-based Human Rights Lawyer ] In Nigeria, beyond the Superior Courts of record recognized by the Constitution of Nigeria(as amended), there exist several other layers of courts, most of which exist by dint of the laws of the various states. In this class are the Customary Courts, Magistrates Courts, the Area Courts, among others.  In Akwa Ibom State, the Customary Courts occupy the immediate layer after the Customary Court of Appeal (though yet to be established), which explains why appeals from the Customary Courts go to the High Courts(S.67, CCL,2022).The Customary Court is the closest court to the grassroots(S.1, 14, and 18, CCL.) The Customary Courts in the state handle not less than 70 percent of the cases adjudicated upon in the State.
