Chinua Achebe once alluded that when we gather together at moonlight to have folklore, it is not because we cannot all sight the moon from our respective homes, but it is for the spirit of kinship and brotherhood. Hence, it is not surprising that lawyers under the umbrella of EBF converge quarterly to break words and chart a new cause for EBF, the legal profession and for the greater good of the society. 

Assuredly, I have no doubt that at the end of the meeting, robust and impactful decisions will be reached and agreed upon for the upliftment of legal practice and the fundamental duty on lawyers to continually play a critical role in deepening our constitutional democracy.

Consequently, I commend the leadership of EBF for this massive and usual contribution to the legal profession. Verily,  l welcome member branches of EBF to the meeting while also wishing the Forum a productive and successful assemblage .

Akwa Ibom Customary Courts: Who will Save Our District Court Chairmen? By ~ Meti M. Ukpeh, Esq. [Uyo-based Human Rights Lawyer ] In Nigeria, beyond the Superior Courts of record recognized by the Constitution of Nigeria(as amended), there exist several other layers of courts, most of which exist by dint of the laws of the various states. In this class are the Customary Courts, Magistrates Courts, the Area Courts, among others.  In Akwa Ibom State, the Customary Courts occupy the immediate layer after the Customary Court of Appeal (though yet to be established), which explains why appeals from the Customary Courts go to the High Courts(S.67, CCL,2022).The Customary Court is the closest court to the grassroots(S.1, 14, and 18, CCL.)
